    Why I Sometimes Say No

One of the first things I tell new clients surprises them. There are things I won't do for them.

It isn't the answer people expect from a service business, especially in Dubai, where almost everyone says yes to everything. But I learned in hospitality that a quick yes isn't always the kind one. A yes you can't fully deliver costs the client far more than an honest no on day one.

What I don't do, and why

I'm not a PRO, a visa agent or a real estate broker. When a family needs those things, I bring in licensed people who do it every day and I stay as their single point of contact. I'd rather say that clearly than pretend to be an expert in everything.

I don't employ or sponsor household staff. I help families find, brief and organise the people who work in their home, but the employment relationship stays with them, and so does control.

I don't carry out repairs myself. Licensed partners do the work, and I manage it, check it and make sure it's done properly. You approve the cost before anything starts, and third-party costs are billed at cost, with receipts, with no mark-up.

Large public or corporate events aren't my focus either. A private dinner for twelve at home is. They're different skills, and I'd rather be very good at one.

    The small no's matter too

Sometimes a client asks for a table tonight at a restaurant that's fully booked. I'll always reply the same day and I'll try, but I won't promise what I can't control. If it isn't possible, I'll say so early and suggest something good instead of leaving them waiting.

Sometimes the honest answer is that a family doesn't need much help at all. Their home is in good shape, their staff are reliable, and what they need is someone to call twice a year. I'd rather tell them that than sell them a monthly plan they won't use.

    Why this matters to me

The families I work with trust me with their homes, keys, children's routines and private lives. That kind of trust doesn't come from saying yes to everything. It comes from people learning that when I say something will be done, it will be, and when I say it can't, I mean that too.

Over time, a clear no is what makes every yes worth something.

If you're wondering whether SETTRA is right for you

Send me a short message about your home and what's taking up your time. I'll tell you honestly what I can take off your hands, what's better handled by someone else, and whether you need me at all.
